When Eli Goldstein founded J’envie in 1978, the garment industry was focused on what was termed at that time as “classification dressing”. He started his company making skirts in gabardine. Indeed, it was a very different time in fashion! As the skirts succeeded at retail, he decided to add pants to the line, and eventually, the well known “boyfriend jacket”. The company continued to thrive. In 1989, his daughter, Linda Sherman, joined him full-time in sales, design, and moreover, to assist in planning for the company’s future growth.

For many years, the company operated selling gabardine in multiple colors and select styles. As other manufacturers in the industry attempted to produce the same concept, Linda and Eli realized that they needed to reinvent their line, and set J’envie apart from the fray. Women’s lifestyles were changing; the customer just didn’t want to dress in that style anymore. Linda and Eli knew that they needed to change with “her”. They came up with a very simple formula. Today’s woman wants to look modern, updated, and stylish. She wants her clothing to be comfortable and fit well. J’envie is very focused on those ideas, and the needs of our customer. We realize that versatility is the key to success!

While J’envie still features great suiting fabrics, we also offer our customers options for updated, casual looks that still look “dressed”. In today’s fashion world, where great items are the foundation of any wardrobe, J’envie has become a very important resource. In addition to unique fabrics imported from Europe and Japan that are specifically designed for our collections, we also offer exceptional knitwear and styles in leather.

In 2001, Linda brought in designer Kristy Nelson to add a youthful perspective, and give a “fresh eye” to the collection. They have achieved a great balance, and work together as a formidable team to maintain J’envie as the success it is today.

Today, almost 32 years later, J’envie is still a “close knit”, family run business. We continue to address a specific niche in the market. The collection is still manufactured in the USA, which is a great source of pride for everyone associated with J’envie. This allows us to offer our retail customers the ability to reorder, and special order, the “best-sellers” every season.
